LET NO ROCK CRY OUT FOR YOU!

Carol Phillip-Tudor

If my people, which are called by my name shall humble themselves, and prayer and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and will heal their land- 2 Chronicles 7:14.

The question has been asked repeatedly in recent times “Why is the Church silent?” The question, on better revision, would be better served if it asks “When will the Church cease to be silent?” The federation of St. Kitts-Nevis is virtually at the point where rocks will cry out for want of voices proclaiming that righteousness and goodness are non-negotiable parts of a nation espousing Christianity as its main column of support.

Albeit, anyone denouncing the immoral conduct of leaders of this nation are suddenly part of an imaginary PAM (People’s Action Movement) agenda. Robust Labour supporters speaking their consciences are suddenly part of this fanciful PAM agenda. The aim of those who have fashioned this deceitful ruse is to silence those who will not conform to the unscrupulous practices of government. That aim, likewise, is to denigrate the verity of persons speaking their consciences in a way that,  firstly, label their messages as unconstructive, but secondly to demote the whole of those persons to being nothing other than rotten to the core.

Christians are called to be persecuted for righteousness sake and as such Bishop Ron Dublin-Collins is no martyr. He is merely fulfilling his prophesy.  If we are to accept that  Bishop Dublin- Collins is no saint and he is in fact, according to Financial Secretary Mrs. Janet Harris, a man of ‘usual aggressive manner’ prone to ‘unjustified attacks’, cheque bouncer and ordinary liar, let us also accept that God has indeed began a work in Bishop Dublin-Collins.

Of the many mysteries of the world and its much wonderment, which humans have unadvisedly pared down to seven, none is said to work as mysteriously wonderful as does God’s workings. The most striking part of God’s tapestry of wonderment is the types of persons he chooses to move forward his manifestations as the true and living God.

The canonical gospel introduces Mary Magdalene as a woman cleansed of seven demons, a prostitute and most likely the woman Jesus used to teach humility and forgiveness to the multitude whom he questioned that if any among them is to be found without sin than that any should cast the first stone.

Jonah the most reluctant of any messenger, Jesus’ teachings has said of him, “An evil and adulterous generation seekth after a sign and there shall no sign be given to it but the sign of the prophet Jonah.”  Imagine an entire generation being dependent on a man, who refuses to obey and to go where he is told to go, for the purpose their deliverance. Imagine even more poignantly the artifice of man and mammal engaged in swallowing and vomiting to affect the word of God to come to pass. Peter, whom Jesus knew would betray him thrice, was given the greatest honour bestowed on mankind. Jesus said of Peter, “Thou art peter and upon this rock will I build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

The account of Saul could be added here, but much more convincingly in these modern times so too could the account of Reverend Isaiah Thomas. Arguably, Reverend Thomas is a man engaged in a troubled period of his life in the winding road of apostasy. He has remained faithful to the political party he supports. He has that right. Yet, roped in with the rabid attention to destroying Bishop Dublin-Collins, Reverend Thomas’ part in the NGO Coalition report on which he affixed his name has brought him sooner to sacrifice than any had expected. Plausibly, Reverend Isaiah could say to his accusers as Balaam’s ass had spoken to him on his way down to the plains of Moab, “Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine until this day? Was I wont to do so unto thee?” God has, too, begun a work in Reverend Isaiah. The work of God begun in Pastor Leroy Benjamin is not for this pen to say.

The appeasement, which the church is courting to circumvent the wrath of the machinery that will consume them if they cry out in condemnation, is a more mordant judgment if the Church continues to behave as though the tribulations of the federation is an acceptable state for any God-fearing nation.

Christians are frequently swift with condemnations regarding fornication, homosexuality, stealing, murders and all other adverse offenses to their biblical principles. Can they not now tell the difference between right and wrong?

The scriptures have placed such premium on Christianity that so little is required of Christians for God to work a work in them. If they do as they ought, God has promised to heal their land and that is a stunning promise for a people and a country whose healings are both overdue.

The angst exhibited by the body Christian is implicit.  Others, too, suffer this anguish since the implementation of a willful entanglement used in muddling the differences between holding the Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, and ministers like him, accountable to their jobs, without being labeled a harsh critic of the prime minister. Either way, the prime minister is situated in a job where both criticism and accountability are as valid as any surveillance apparatus used to collect information to commend him for a good job, if he so does.

The prime minister has abused the sacred trust of the people and he has decimated their rights to free and fair elections. Christians must respond and they must do it in a way that God has asked of them. Let them pray. Let them condemn this exploitation so that no blood is later heavy on their hands. Christians? Let no Rock cry out for you!
